The Hotel Barging Experience
Our barges gently introduce you to some of Europe’s finest scenery, fascinating history and local culture – from the picturesque vineyards of Burgundy to the spectacular Scottish Highlands; from the sun-drenchedwaterways of the South of France to the picturesque Moselle in Germany; from the storybook Alsace region to the serenity of the Loire Valley.
A cruise on one of our hotel barges is a wonderful combination. You will glide serenely along waterwaysthat pass through magnificent countryside; be taken on fascinating local excursions; indulge in delicious meals, fine wines and comfortable accommodation – whilst all the time being pampered by your attentive crew.
A gentle cruise on a hotel barge is the perfect way to discover the very soul of Europe, exploring its wonderful countryside and historical treasures and meeting its many friendly, diverse people.
Far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life, our hotel barge voyages allow you to travel in luxury without the strains of packing and unpacking, whilst enjoying a balanced blend of daily excursions and fascinating cruising.
The Journey Has Begun
You are collected at the designated meeting point by either the Captain or your tour guide and escorted by air-conditioned minibus to your hotel barge. After a champagne welcome and the opportunity to meet the English-speaking crew and your fellow passengers, we will show you to your comfortable stateroom or suite, with its full en suite facilities.
We sometimes embark on a short cruise on the first evening and immediately the fascinating world of barge cruising begins to unfold before you. Then, perhaps after an aperitif, it’s time to indulge in your first gourmet dining experience aboard, complemented, of course, by fine wines.
Relax and Unwind
Each day, once under way, your hotel barge moves so sedately from one peaceful mooring to the next, you can just wander along the tow-path, getting on or off at pretty locks. You may stumble across some local villagers playing a game of boules, or discover a vineyard, its vines laden with grapes.
The barges all carry bicycles for tow-path riding and other excursions ashore, and the little villages and farms we discover as we cruise by become part of the adventure. Alternatively, just absorb the ever-changing scenery from a comfortable lounger or deck-chair on the sundeck.
Then, after a day of cruising and sightseeing, your barge moors up for the night and there is plenty of time for a cocktail before dinner, or perhaps to enjoy a relaxing soak in the spa pool on most of our larger vessels.
In Burgundy, the Loire Valley and England, we also offer hot-air ballooning as an exciting option. Ballooning generally takes place in the early hours just after dawn or before sunset, when the air is still and the light is perfect for drifting gently along and gazing down at the beautiful countryside below.

A note from Clare at Ponders Travel:
I simply had to share with you all my excitement at the planning and booking of my next holiday
Back In January of this year I booked a European Waterways luxury all inclusive barge cruise along the upper Burgundy Canal in France
We will be cruising for 6 days from the French Town on Tanlay – visiting Veneray Les laumes, Montbard, Ravieres, Ancy Le Franc, Lezinnes and back to Tanlay
Our cruise will be on board the lovely La Belle Epoque – taking just 12 passengers.
We are to start our holiday leaving London on the Euro Star to Paris a day ahead of the cruise so that we can spend a night in Paris. We hotel we are staying in is the Hotel recommended by EuropeanWaterways – The Westminster Hotel, which looks like a stunning luxury hotel.
I have to say from the minute we have booked I am totally impressed with all the attention to details supplied by European Waterways in preparation for our holiday
Within a few days of confirming the holiday a heavy parcel arrived – a delightful file, titled the Ships log – with sections full of detail including – Waterways, Wines, Cheeses, Cuisine, journal, photos, friends
A fantastic read, giving us more information that you can imagine about where we are going, what to expect and what we may see, Then the food and drink experience, everything about the regional foods and wines and even a host of recipes. Attention to detail is the best I have ever seen in any travel documentation.
As we paid our balance we then received our tickets, Once again in a lovely large leather bound wallet, with all extra leaflets from the relevant points of interest we can visit on our journey. Fabulous
So all we have to do now is count down the days until our holiday
Watch out for my daily log of our holiday in the blog section on our website – I have high expectations already. I can’t wait to share the delights with you all
