A quick stop on the Queen Mary 2.

Yvonne our Sales Director here at Ponders recently had the pleasure of attending a Cruise Conference that came with a visit to the Queen Mary 2 – Here are her thoughts…

Having recently attended the CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) conference in Southampton I had the great pleasure of visiting the Queen Mary 2 for the day, having a tour around the ship and lunch on board. Here are a few facts about QM2 and a little review of my tour.
Gross tonnage: 151,000 approx
Guests: 2,691
Crew: 1,292
Ratio: 2:1
Square foot per guest 56
Height 72m which is 26 m higher than the Statue of Liberty
345m long = 37 double –decker buses.
Queen Mary 2 is still the longest, tallest, widest and grandest ocean ‘liner’ ever built. She is the only ocean liner in the world today and is the fastest passenger ship in service.
Queen Mary 2 has sailed over 1.79 million nautical miles, over 280 Atlantic crossings, over 500 voyages and called at 215 different ports in 80 countries, with Southampton being the most visited port and New York the second.
My tour started in the Grand Lobby where I entered the ship on deck 3 next to the champagne bar and shops and following her 90 million pound remastering in 2016 she has over 5,000 commissioned works on board including a fabulous bronze relief portrait of the ship.
We proceeded up to deck 12 to the Pavilion Pool and bar area where we encountered one of five pools on board the ship; this one features a retractable dome so you can laze around the pool even if the weather is not fine.
Also on deck 12 are the ‘kennels’ as QM2 is the only ship that can regularly carry animals, dogs and cats can travel in pampered comfort to and from New York. There is even a British Lamp post for the English pooches and an American fire hydrant for the American doggies ! If during your cruise you would like to pay the kennels a visit, this can be arranged.
The staterooms on board the ship are very well designed and quite spacious compared to some other cruise lines. Queens Grill suites have both bedroom and separate living room, balcony, walk in wardrobe and personal butler. Both Queens and Princess Grill suites both have their own separate restaurants.
The Verandah restaurant was introduced to the ship in the 2016 remastering and is described as a celebration of contemporary French Cuisine.
Kings Court is the relaxed, informal dining experience with self service of hot and cold buffet selections. Alternative dining includes Italian, Pan Asian, Mexican and American Smokehouse menus at a surcharge. The Britannia restaurant is included for all guests and offers full service at all meal times.
Other areas of the ship included ‘Illuminations’ which is the only planetarium at sea showing a new astronomy show each day and also functions as a 3D cinema showing the latest blockbuster movies. The Chart room is the perfect setting for pre or post dinner drinks with gentle jazz music in the background.
The iconic ‘Queens Room’ ballroom where the famous white-gloved afternoon tea is served to the beautiful tones of the harpist and also the elegant setting for the gala balls which feature a live orchestra.
My lunch on board in the Britannia Restaurant was fabulous and the service excellent and I had a truly inspiring visit. Queen Mary 2 is such a beautiful liner and her journeys iconic, from short weekend getaways to the famous Transatlantic Crossings or full World Voyages. The White Star Service and attentions goes beyond expectations with one crew member for every two guests.
Cunard are also now featuring unique event cruises on QM2 which include:
Transatlantic Fashion Week: 31st August 2017 and 2nd September 2018
Enjoy fashion shows, talks and hosted dinners whilst heading across the Atlantic to New York fashion Week

World Space week: 6th October 2017
Celebrate international World Space Week with a special space-themed Transatlantic Crossing. QM2 is a perfect venue to stargaze – away from light and air pollution.

A Journey of Genealogy (in association with Ancestry) : 4th November 2018
The first crossing offering the opportunity for guests to trace their family tree. Guests can learn how to start researching their family history and can explore the largest online collection of family history records.
