D Day the 70th Anniversary.

D-DAY 2014

2014 offers three compelling and emotional cruises to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 1944 D-Day landings. For many, the big advantage of all three is that they all start and finish in a British port, eliminating the need for flying.
Swan Hellenic’s sleek, highly styled Minerva will call at Le Havre, from where passengers can see the American invasion beaches of Utah and the famous ‘bloody Omaha’. The area also has numerous German pill boxes still in place. There is also the D-Day museum itself, at nearby Arromanches.
This cruise also calls at Cherbourg, scene of much bitter and protracted fighting in June of 1944. Here you can see Le Redoubtable, a decommissioned nuclear submarine. Cherbourg was also one of the last stops for the Titanic on her ill fated maiden crossing in 1912.
There will also be a visit to Caen, the scene of the bloodiest fighting of the entire Normandy campaign. You’ll also have the chance to see the remains of the ingenious ‘Mulberry’ bridges that played such a vital role in supplying the troops back in 1944.
Fred. Olsen’s lovely Braemar offers an itinerary that includes both Cherbourg, and an overnight stay in Le Havre. This allows more time to visit such attractions as the Allied war cemeteries, and the landing beaches at Gold, Juno and Sword. You can visit the site of the famous Pegasus Bridge; this was the scene of the first, desperate combat on D-Day, when British paratroopers dropped way behind German lines to seize this vital road bridge in the early hours of June 6th, 1944.
There is also ample time to visit Bayeux, the first major town in France to be liberated, complete with its amazing tapestry. Braemar also calls at Dunkirk, scene of the famous 1940 evacuation of the BEF.
Cruise and Maritime’s Marco Polo offers a six night itinerary, with a unique call at Portsmouth to allow visitors to see the operations rooms that were the nerve centre of the invasion plans. There is also a call at picturesque Honfleur, with excellent access to the historic Pegasus Bridge.
This voyage also features an overnight call at Zeebrugge, for those who wish to visit the Flanders battlefields of the Great War.
On June 6th itself, there will be a gathering of all these ships as part of a vast flotilla off the invasion beaches themselves. Quite an unforgettable experience.
