Discover Jersey.

Some of our Ponders team have recently been away to Jersey to check out all that it has to offer, so we can ensure when you are booking your short break to Jersey that we recommend the right hotel and are up to date on all that this beautiful island has to offer.
So here is a little snippet from one of the Ponders Team – Paula.

Having never been to Jersey before I had no expectations other than hoping it was going to be warmer than the mainland as it is closer to France and boasts the best sunshine rates in the British Isles. Sadly we were unable to leave from Cambridge airport which would have been ideal, but as the Cambridge flights operate weekly on a Saturday from May until September, we flew from Gatwick. You are only in the air for 35 minutes so it’s a nice short flight. Of course, you can ferry across too, but I do not have very good sea faring legs that’s for sure! And it was March…

Warmly hosted by CIG Travel (Airways) we arrived to lovely blue skies and a temperature around 15/16 degrees. We checked into the Pomme D’or, a centrally located hotel in St Helier, overlooking Liberation Square and the yacht marina. This building, interestingly, was commandeered and used by the Germans as its Naval Headquarters for five years in 1940 and there are interesting pictures dotted around its foyer showing this. A traditional hotel with spacious rooms, friendly knowledgeable staff and good food. A few doors down is the The Royal Yacht Hotel, one of my favourites. A very attractive and trendy hotel again fronting onto the marina. It is a thriving hotel, attracting all ages with it’s vibrant bars, restaurtants with the added choice for those that like late nights or have something to celebrate, a nightclub. Close by and easily within walking distance is the small quaint town with lots of places to eat and shops to browse. Neither of these hotels have their own car parks, but there is a carpark within walking distance.

On a foggy second day, one of my highlights was visiting St Brelade’s Bay and St Aubins Harbour which is a short drive from St Helier. Very pretty and family friendly with the locals being particularly friendly and helpful. Another of my favourites was The Somerville Hotel, a lovely building that sits above St Aubins Harbour with views out to sea. More traditional inside the rooms yet inviting, comfortable and spaceous. The restaurant enjoyed 180 degree views with excellent service and friendly staff. Ideal for those that want a more peaceful hotel and quiet location.

I loved the location of St Brelade’s Bay hotel, another lovely and typical style building in St Helier, a stones throw from the beach, it enjoyed beautiful views, which in March, is also used by dog walkers. This hotel has all the facilities that a family would want. Relaxing comfortable coffee, tea area stretching halfway across the front of the hotel, to its large restaurant. A large reception area with plenty of room for arrivals, lifts and large staircase for ease of access to rooms. A nicely configurated hotel, with a huge gym and indoor pool with its own café overlooking gardens where you can lounge in the sun or make use of its outdoor pool. Sitting above the pool is a tennis court. Children/teenagers have use of a room with t.v, games console and pool table. I really thought this was in a super location and felt it had a ‘holiday’ feel with the beach opposite.

I loved and enjoyed Jersey for its peacefulness and interesting history, more of which I intend to discover. As we had a full itinerary we missed a visit to a recommended and nearby Nature Reserve, and the War museum. Therefore a return visit is most definitely on the cards for me and my family.
