Music and Culture in Barbados.

Day 4:

I have combined day 4 and 5 as I’m delighted to say there isn’t a huge amount to report, simply because we have now officially adapted to the easy going way of Bajan life, lots of sun, sea, sand, cocktails and of course food…

On Friday evening we visited ‘Oistins’ which is a small village on the south coast. Every Friday evening this is the place to be in Barbados, frequented by locals and tourists alike, it offers an excellent way to soak up the culture.

In simple terms, Oistins is a street market, but every stool/shack is a BBQ with the local fishermen frying up their catch of the day and serving it alongside your choice of salads, rice, potatoes and of course mac & cheese. There are literally hundreds of BBQ’s to choose from and the atmosphere is electric. We had red snapper (a whole one) and a swordfish steak costing only 30 BDS which is about £10, amazing value for money. The rum punch was approximately £2 per glass, but the strength of it meant you only needed a few!!!

The live reggae DJ plays until midnight and everyone joins in for a dance… Oistins is a MUST on a Friday night in Barbados.

Day 5:

Today we had to check out of Tamarind as we were moving down to the south coast for the rest of our holiday. We had fell in love with Tamarind so were sad to be leaving.

Our transfer down to ‘Turtle Beach’ took around 30 minutes. Turtle Beach also belongs to the Elegant Hotels group, along with Tamarind and The House, however, it is an all inclusive property and is the only property that Elegant Hotels has in the south of the island.

We have a ‘one bedroom garden view suite’ at Turtle Beach which was absolutely massive! It is a perfect room for families and I was told by the manager that it’s a very popular room category for families.

Turtle Beach is the perfect all inclusive resort for families. There are 3 restaurants to choose from, a few different swimming pools and a perfect beach. In my opinion the beach here is the real selling point, flat white fluffy sands and crystal clear seas… We even saw a monkey in the trees near the beach!

We dined in the Italian adults only restaurant called ‘asiagos’ to order from the a la carte menu. It was very nice. The alternative would have been a buffet style dinner in the waterfront restaurant.

After a Bailey’s nightcap we retired to our spacious suite for yet another long and comfortable sleep…
