Yvonne’s experience of Silversea ship ‘Silver Spirit’…….

Each new day presents a personal canvas to fill with broad brush strokes of bright possibilities.

Then decide to join the daily happenings or decide to do nothing at all. Distinct among luxury cruise lines, Silversea personalises a variety of “big-ship activities with small-ship ambience for an onboard experience as diverse and unique as you.’ (ref: Silversea)
Yvonne Allen Sales Director shares ‘her’ luxury cruise experience aboard Silversea ship ‘Silver Spirit’.

After flying into a very sunny hot Athens (36 degrees) I had a private transfer to the ship which was berthed at Piraeus Port.
Having worked in the cruise industry for a number of years I had experience of over 40 plus ships under my belt, however, Silver Spirit (built in 2009) still exceeded my expectations. My first impressions were of a very elegant looking ship, a good size at 36,009 tons and a maximum occupancy of only 540 guest, which means an excellent passenger space ratio of 66.6.
The embarkation process was quick and seamless and I was soon on board being given a very friendly welcome with a cold flannel to cool me down and a chilled glass of champagne along with a friendly steward promptly relieving me of any remaining hand luggage!

My suite, ‘a mid ship veranda ‘ was very spacious with a good sized bathroom with large shower and bath. Next to the bathroom was a walk in wardrobe with plenty of hanging space, draws, a personal safe and spa robe & slippers ! Silversea suites offer one of the highest space-per-guest ratios of any luxury cruise accommodations. All Silversea suites have ocean views, and most include a private teak veranda so that you can breathe in the fresh sea air simply by stepping outside your door. And regardless of the ship or suite category, all guests are pampered with the personalised services of an attentive butler.
Within seconds of being shown to my suite I met my butler ‘Rizza’, who was an absolute delight.
Rizza had a silver tray with an array of very fine designer toiletries for me to choose from and also gave me a tour of my suite. I was asked what drinks I would like my fridge stocked with and she also offered to unpack for me. My case arrived very soon after I boarded the ship.
I also had a large double bed, 2 flat screen TV’s, an ipod docking station, personalised stationary and a welcome letter giving details of excursions pre booked, a comfy sitting area with a sofa, chairs and a table and a bottle of fine French champagne on ice waiting for me.
What a fabulous welcome !
Silversea provide an area on their website where guests can pre book excursions, spa treatments and select restaurants.

I was certainly getting to like the head to toe pampering and I had a whole week of it to look forward to!
It was a joy to be able to relax in my suite and watch the ship quietly set sail on her way to our first port of call which was Corfu.
Later that evening I had dinner in ‘The Restaurant’ Sparkling with silver, crystal and candlelight, it encircles its guests with sophisticated elegance and impeccable service. Contemporary, international cuisine is created by talented chefs, and menus feature a series of signature dishes created exclusively for Silversea by Relais & Châteaux.
My only dilemma was do I have the fillet beef or lobster, however the waiter suggested I was able to have both – and so the rest of the guests on my table followed suit!

After dinner I had the pleasure of a broadway style show in the ‘show lounge’ and then after a few more glasses of champagne headed back to my suite to curl up beneath Egyptian cotton linen and a fluffy duvet, oh and eat the delicious handmade chocolate placed on my gorgeous feather pillow from the pillow menu ! (choice of nine different pillow types).

The next day was spent at sea, which gave me the opportunity to take advantage of the Spa where I had a very relaxing back massage and facial. I also had chance to have a browse in the onboard shops before going up to the pool deck for an afternoon of relaxing in the sunshine. Although I had a lazy afternoon in the sunshine, there were still plenty of other activities to do on the ship – lessons in different languages, cookery demonstrations by the Executive Chef, a fully equipped Gym and spa pool for example.
This was truly a 6 star luxury cruise experience. The crew were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
This evening I ate in one of the speciality restaurants called La Terrazza at the back of the ship, this restaurant is open for casual, buffet-style breakfast and lunch with indoor or al fresco dining on the outdoor terrace in the day time and during the evening, La Terrazza transforms into an à la carte traditional Italian restaurant. Authentic recipes and the freshest ingredients come together with flair and passion — a flavourful expression of Silversea’s distinctive Italian heritage
Day 3 saw our beautiful ship arrive in Corfu , the greenest and possibly the most prettiest of all the Greek Islands – emerald mountains, ocher and pink buildings, shimmering silver olive leaves and turquoise waters lapping rocky coves.
After a little souvenir shopping I retired to the pool deck to relax in the jaccuzzi – with yet another glass of champagne ! The service on Silversea is impeccable, the crew have a knack of anticipating your every need without being intrusive. It was also a pleasure not to have to keep on signing receipts for every drink purchased (as it is the case on most 4-5 star ships) as Silversea ships are all inclusive.
The little luxuries like, being offered chilled fruit kebabs and cold flannels on hot sunny days around the pool make all the difference.

Other ports of call on our itinerary included katakolon – Greece , Kotor – Montenegro, Split – Croatia and our final destination Venice.
Sailing into Kotor is an absolute joy, the scenery is spectacular and often compared to Norway. Here I took part in an excursion and was impressed by the organisation and felt like we were a private party as we were only a small group, another example of Silversea’s attention to detail. Excursions are organised so guests never feel they are overcrowded or being ‘hearded’ around.

Whilst I was on board I had the opportunity to try out all the restaurants including the Pool Bar & Grill, casual and convenient. At the Pool Bar, cocktails are served with soft ocean breezes. Poolside menu options feature healthy CruiseLite selections and light fare for lunch and dinner including grilled meats and fresh-from-the-oven pizza. As the stars begin to peek out from a darkening sky, the top deck of the Pool Bar & Grill is transformed into The Grill – an intimate al fresco eatery featuring a fun, interactive Black Rock Grill experience. A preheated volcanic rock is brought to your table, allowing you to cook such delicacies as steak, veal, pork, lamb, salmon, fish or prawns exactly to your liking right at your own table. And what a table it is. A white linen tablecloth laden with delectable morsels, and every seat with an unmatched ocean view.

Other dining options include ‘ Le Champagne’ The only Wine Restaurant by Relais & Châteaux at sea which can be found aboard all of the Silversea fleet. Indulge in an evening where fine wines are complemented by a set tasting menu of regionally inspired dishes in an intimate, elegant setting. An extraordinary six-course experience celebrating the world’s most distinguished wine regions. This is one of the restaurants where there is a Per guest reservation fee.
Also ‘Seishin’ where Innovative Asian fusion cuisine, Kobe beef and spider lobster vie for the attention of your tastebuds in this cosy, stylish venue. Seishin features a large, round chef’s table as its centrepiece. Settle in to the surrounding tables and watch the chef at work sculpting fresh sushi and sashimi. The varied menu ranges from exquisite bento (boxed meal) lunches and a la carte specialities to a nine-course degustation dinner. Per guest reservation fee would apply.

If you fancy a night in your suite with a good movie and drinks of your choice from your own stocked fridge you can even have dinner in-suite served course by course by your butler.
I did have a rather delicious breakfast in my suite one morning which was rather special. Waking up and stepping onto your veranda to see beautiful blue sea or a different landscape from the day before is an amazing feeling.

Night life on Silver Spirit was magical. One of the benefits of cruising is that your ‘night on the town’ is a short walk from your suite. I very quickly got to know a few of my fellow guests and enjoyed beginning the night with a cocktail and chatter of the days adventures and the how relaxing to know that nobody need reach for the bill as it is all inclusive.
After a delightful evening meal it was good to know there were plenty of places to continue with the entertainment.
The dress code tends to be ‘county casual’ with one formal night per week.
In the Show Lounge the entertainment ranges from full-scale production shows and classical soloists, to cultural entertainment and feature films.
The Panorama Lounge, where I spent a great deal of time is specially designed to provide an uninterrupted view of the day’s destination from the comfort of the ship’s interior. It is an ideal place to unwind, enjoy afternoon tea, listen to the pianist and watch the setting sun. The drinks are complimentary, the music live and inviting. I spent many an evening dancing the night away to a range of music for every taste.
Stars Supper Club was one of my favourite areas in an evening . The warm and inviting Art Deco-inspired decor of this dining venue elegantly recalls the supper clubs of the 1930s. Trendsetting menus offer a modern twist, showcasing regional and seasonal delicacies to be enjoyed in a succession of small courses. You can arrive early for cocktails and stay late as the mood is transformed by live music, dancing and nightclub-style entertainment.
Day 7 saw the Silver Spirit sailing into Venice for an overnight stay, the highlight of my trip. The most romantic city in the world and sailing in with the sun rising was a sight I will treasure for a long time.

I can quite honestly say, I have had the most amazing time on a truly luxurious cruise line.
