All that’s new with Holland America this Spring 2017 ( its a lot!)

Holland America Line has teamed up with America’s Test Kitchen to offer an enticing selection of live onboard cooking shows and hands-on workshops where guests will learn foolproof techniques and user-friendly recipes for making delectable dishes with confidence.

America’s Test Kitchen hosts will showcase a variety of 45-minute live cooking shows and 90-minute hands-on workshops, which range from learning to shape Asian dumplings to making the perfect pie crust. Guests will benefit from over twenty years of America’s Test Kitchen’s rigorous testing to learn techniques and concepts that really do work.

45-minute demo courses will feature a mix of video content, live instruction, taste tests and recipe samples. Some of the courses in development include We Love Chocolate, Everything Salmon, Getting to Know Chillies, Flavours of the Mediterranean, Meatless Monday Meals and New Italian Favourites.

90-minute hands-on workshops will focus on teaching a specific skill set, for example learning to bake the perfect pies or handmade pasta.

America’s Test Kitchen is the most-watched instructional cooking programme on US television, with 60 million consumer touch points each month over television, Radio, Websites, Social Media, Email and Direct Mail. More than 10 million books have been sold with an average of 12 new titles published each year.

Holland America Line is amplifying its destination immersion experiences with the launch of Explorations Central, or EXC, a multifaceted experience that combines a wide array of indispensable travel resources with enrichment opportunities for guests that make their travel experience more engaging, vivid and meaningful. The programme will include:-
• In-depth content that will showcase digital storytelling and interactive video experiences on subjects ranging from travel and food to the arts.
• EXC Talks by the EXC Guides that bring each locale to life by digging deeper, beyond facts and figures. Guests will learn some of the local customs, hear interesting tales and gain extensive insight into each port of call.
• EXC Encounters, local cultural representatives will come on board before the ship reaches the next destination to build anticipation for the adventures that await. Guests might learn how to play the steel drums from a Trinidadian, make a flower lei with a native Hawaiian. Also, guests will learn local language and cultural etiquette lessons, hands-on discovery of local items and products, participatory programmes covering music and dance and storytelling sessions.
Debuting onboard ms Westerdam in Spring 2017, Explorations Central (EXC) will be located in a section of the Crow’s Nest that includes port guides and maps, plus so much more.
Programming for EXC began in early 2017 and will roll out across the entire fleet by the end of the year.

O, The Oprah Magazine partnership through 2018 on departures from North America ports and will include:
• Talks from members of the SuperSoul 100 – thought leaders and visionaries who use their talents to elevate humanity, who will be sharing inspirational ideas and tips for living your best life
• A variety of engaging activities that bring the magazine to life including meditation, tai chi, healthy cooking demonstrations, an onboard book club and more
In addition the following cruises will be branded “The Oprah Magazine Adventure of Your Life” and feature exclusive programming developed with the magazine’s editors and creative director

2017 marks 70 years since our company has been showing guests the best of Alaska. That’s longer than anyone else, and longer than Alaska has been a state!
To celebrate our 70th year in Alaska, Holland America Line has created a series of onboard treats for Alaska guests who cruise during summer 2017.
o A new BBC Earth Alaska show, ‘Alaska in Concert’, is being developed that combines live music set against a backdrop of mesmerizing footage from the BBC Earth television series, Wild Alaska, where audiences will experience the cycle of four seasons
o In addition, Holland America Line is proud to continue its long partnership with the Huna indigenous people of Glacier Bay to showcase “Native Voices,” a programme of Huna cultural interpretation while cruising through Glacier Bay National Park.
o America’s Test Kitchen turns up the heat with its Every Salmon shipboard cooking show featuring top tips to select and prepare the Alaska favourite. In addition, guests will be able to indulge in the Midnight Sun cocktail created by Master Mixologist Dale DeGroff.
o Holland America Line currently features beers by Alaska Brewing Co., both on the menus and during tastings, and for the 70th celebration the company will expand its selection by introducing a customised, exclusive Holland America Line Pale Ale. Another exclusive anniversary beer by Denali Brewing Company will be available at Denali for guests on Land+Sea Journeys.
o Of course every cruise will also feature a 70th Anniversary champagne toast!
o The main dining room will showcase special décor and Alaska centric menus and a finish with 70th Anniversary Baked Alaska


In addition to established collaborations with Lincoln Center Stage, Billboard Onboard, B.B. King’s Blues Club, Food and Wine magazine, The New York Times, Windows and our Culinary Council comprised of Jonnie Boer, David Burke, Elizabeth Falkner and Jacques Torres, the past year saw new partnerships with:

• AFAR Media: The experiential travel expert now provides “Destination Guides” for all of Holland America Line’s ports of call and scenic cruising that are available on Holland America Line’s website, giving guests the most comprehensive information accessible to travellers in the cruise industry. AFAR utilises its vast network of local experts to curate the content, providing travellers with authentic recommendations for top attractions, restaurants and shopping experiences.

• BBC Earth: Through innovative and breathtaking programming that is a signature of BBC Earth, guests will become immersed in the natural wonders of the world through filmed presentations, live multimedia shows, enrichment experiences, children’s activities and theme cruises. A live concert has been specially created for Holland America Line based on the “Blue Planet” programme that takes guests on a journey across oceans and landscapes to extreme conditions.

• Master Mixologist Dale DeGroff: A 2015 James Beard Who’s Who Inductee, Master Mixologist Dale DeGroff brings an innovative menu of creative cocktails to Holland America Line. DeGroff — known as “King Cocktail,” author of two best-selling cocktail books and founding president of The Museum of the American Cocktail — has developed a drink menu to showcase artfully prepared signature classics as well as some unique originals.

• Rijksmuseum: Celebrating Holland America Line’s Dutch heritage, the “Rijksmuseum at Sea” created by Rijksstudio will be installed on ships fleet-wide over the next few years, debuting onboard ms Westerdam in Spring 2017. The dedicated space will include reproductions of some of the museum’s most famous works of art. Additionally, guests will be able to enjoy cultural activities such as video screenings about the Rijksmuseum and its collection, workshops and lectures by Rijksmuseum personnel and videos in staterooms.


When ms Westerdam emerges from her dry dock in April, the ship will feature the following enhancements

• Explorations Central (EXC) will debut and be located in a section of the Crow’s Nest that includes port guides and maps, plus so much more.
• The brand new [email protected] will feature reproductions of some of the museum’s most famous works of art. And cultural activities such as video screenings about the Rijksmuseum and its collection, workshops and lectures by Rijksmuseum personnel and videos in staterooms.
• America’s Test Kitchen amenities and programming will be added
• The sophisticated Gallery Bar will make its debut in the former Northern Lights venue and feature a whimsical mix of artwork including portraits, landscapes, still-life and abstract pieces.
• Set to join the popular B.B. Kings Blues Club are Lincoln Center Stage, in partnership with Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, showcasing an ensemble performing chamber music and Billboard Onboard, in partnership with Billboard, featuring 50 years of chart-topping hits
Food & Drinks
• The Lido will be re-branded as Lido Market and receive an upgrade in service and menu.. The range of choices includes speciality stations such as Breadboard, with fresh-baked breads and pastries; Wild Harvest, offering a bountiful selection of ingredients for made-to-order salads; Homestead, serving up comfort classics; Distant Lands, featuring exotic flavours from around the globe; Market Central, serving continental breakfast or light meals to go; Perk, where freshly brewed coffee, hot and iced tea and chilled juices are available; and Sweet Spot, dishing up delightful ice cream creations and desserts.
• New York Pizza, which debuted on ms Nieuw Amsterdam, replaces Slice. New York Pizza offers five Big Apple-themed thin-crust personal pizzas made to order in less than 10 minutes, as well as the option to select your own preferred toppings from an extensive list. After ordering, diners are given a pager to alert them when their pie comes out of the oven. In the meantime, they can enjoy a salad, and afterwards the pizzeria offers a couple of sweet desserts to top off the meal.
• Suites will be upgraded. The main living area will be refreshed with new furniture, carpet, wall coverings and soft goods. Electronic upgrades included a new USB outlet added to the bed’s headboard, bedside LED reading lights, upgraded electrical outlets and a lighted closet rod. Neptune and Pinnacle suites also received a Bose Bluetooth speaker.
• Suite bathrooms also receive a makeover, with designer glass tile serving as a backdrop to the refreshed vanity area. Other enhancements include contemporary mirrors with integrated LED lighting, stylish floor tiles and a nightlight.
• A new interactive television system will be installed throughout the ship, featuring large LED flat-screen TV’s with complimentary movies on demand as well as easy access to the daily programme and shipboard information including restaurant overviews, spa services and guest billing.
• A further 25 staterooms will be added (18 Verandah and 7 Interior)
