Whats NEWS for 2015

New for 2015 – On The Horizon

At 141,000 tons and carrying more than 3600 passengers, the new P&O flagship will be the largest cruise ship ever built for the U market. The basic structure is similar to Royal Princess and Regal Princess, but it will have two funnels – in the new blue livery – and interiors will be tailored to British tastes. A brigade of Food Hero’s – led by Saturday Kitchen’s James Martin – has been brought in to beef up the culinary offering. Maiden voyage due to leave Southampton on March 14.

Anthem of the Seas
Royal Caribbean’s identical twin of 2014 debutante Quantum of the Seas, Anthem will be sailing from Southampton throughout the summer of 2015; its NorthStar observation pod and Ripcord by iFLY sky-diving simulator will become familiar sights in the Solent. Other innovations include virtual balconies in inside cabins and the first dodgems at sea. Due in April.

Le Lyrical

A spacious sister for Pontant’s fleet of small luxury vessels, Lyrial will have 10 fewer staterooms and suites – 122 against the 132 o Le Boreal, L’Austral and Le Soleal. The maiden voyage, an 8-day itinerary in the Adriatic, sets out from Venice on May 9.

Viking Star
The first of a possible five ocean-going cruise ships joining the record-breaking Viking River fleet and likely to attract a sizeable number of passengers to take to the sea for the first time. Designed for 928 passengers, its size and style will put it in competition with operators such as Oceania and Azamara. Launching in Bergen on Norway’s National Day, May 17.

Norwegian Escape
The first of Norwegian’s Breakaway-plus class, and the lines largest ship to date, Escape measures 163,000 tons and will carry 4,200 passengers. It has one more deck than predecessors Breakaway and Getaway but continues with the Waterfront theme which provides a succession of al fresco bar and restaurant areas on its promenade deck. Under construction in Germany and destined to sail year-round to the Caribbean from Miami, it is expected to make a brief visit to the UK, in October.

On the Horizon

Holland America’s next ship, being built in Italy, is the first in a new Pinnacle-class design. 2,6660 passengers, launching February 2016.

Viking Sky
The second ship to join the Viking Ocean fleet. Identical to Viking Star. 928 passengers, March 2016.

Ovation of the Seas
Third ship in the Royal Caribbean’s innovative Quantam class – though time will tell whether the robot bartenders will survive long enough to join the sky-diving simulator and NorthStar observation capsule on this version. 4,180 passengers, mid-2016.

Oasis 3
Still awaiting the announcement of its real name, the follow-up to Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas is being built in France with a few details changes to the original design – some designed to ensure that it captures the ‘biggest cruise ship in the world’ headlines when it launches in mid-2016. 5,400 passengers.

Regent Seven Seas Explorer
Already touted as the most luxurious ship under construction, the latest addition to the Regent fleet will be bigger than its sister ships – but with capacity for just 738 passengers, still comfortably smaller than most vessels being built today. Summer 2016.

Viking Sea
Ocean Ship number 3 for the Viking fleet. 928 passengers, mid-2016.

Seabourn (unnamed)
A larger version of Seabourn’s Odyssey class and the first of two to be built. 604 passengers, autumn 2016.

Carnival Vista
Details of Carnival’s first new ship since Breeze in 2012 are still sketchy; a major announcement will be made in January. 4,000 passengers, Expected late 2016.
