When Kirker Holidays kindly invited me to join them for a short trip to Switzerland I was both excited and nervous. Switzerland was not a holiday destination I had considered but I have to tell you I was very pleasantly surprised. Full of beautiful scenery, museums and great cuisine.

After arriving in Zurich we were met by a guide who took us on a city tour. One of the first things I noticed was the amount of public transport  that was available – there were trams, buses and trains and all running on time to the exact second which was great and something we in England are not used to. In the summer months Zurich offers free bike hire on daily basis, this allows you to explore all the lovely back streets with their tiny shops and restaurants and many with stunning views. All around Switzerland there are fresh water foundations for you to help yourself, a great idea as drinks can be expensive here.

We then moved onto Lucerne and were lucky enough to stay at the gorgeous Palace Hotel, the lake views from here were just fabulous. The Old Town had some great mediaeval buildings with fabulous paintings and artwork on the walls. Again their public transport was second to none as it was throughout Switzerland.

The Pilatus Mountains is a definite must see, I was taken aback with the views. Amazing doesn’t even begin to explain the true beauty! To be standing at the top  of the mountain, above the clouds in the snow and still be able to see the blue lake along side with the green of the forest of trees and clouds below us  was simply stunning. I would also recommend a guide as there is so much to learn here. There is a new hotel The Hotel Pilatus Klum at the very top of the mountain, why not stay here so you can enjoy these views during your stay. The train ride down from the mountain is an experience not to be missed either as you get to look back at everything with a different perspective.

In Vevey we had a tour guide take us through the lush vineyards, then for a little wine tasting and informative video, it was very interesting and I didn’t realise how much is involved on a year round basis to get the perfect wine. We also visited the Poyet Confectionary Chocolate manufacturer, this was a family run business and  it was a joy to met someone  so passionate about their work, he doesn’t just make the chocolate he designs it and  design  tastes from countries you would never imagine.

Lausanna, here we were lucky enough to have a boat ride along the lake and take in the lovely views, the boats are also included as part of their public transport making it a great way to get around for tourists. Lausanne is where the Olympic Museum is situated, we had a guide from the museum take us around, I must admit normally this is something I wouldn’t be interested in, however it was very interesting and informative and I would of liked to have stayed there longer.

Our last day was spent in Geneva, there is a large expanse of lake here with mountains in the background so having a coffee and watching the world go by was great. Along with the rest of Switzerland Geneva offers history, architecture, museums and excellent boutiques, not forgetting the stunning views wherever you go.

So for me I cant wait to get back to Switzerland to enjoy their fabulous cuisine, breath taking views and  partaking in a little skiing if I time is right. During my trip I stayed in 4 great hotels that Kirker kindly arranged and also visited a lot more of their properties and local restaurants in the different areas. The staff from Kirker and the hotels could not have made me feel more welcome and everyone I met from Switzerland Tourism went out of their way to make sure I had every bit of information needed for each town.
